The Oscar World

Homer the Fish

Welcome to The Oscar World. We prefer to call this site with that name even though there is some information regarding other fishies as well. All kinds of fishies come and go, but oscars will stay! You won't find any scientific mumbo-jumbo here, but our experiences of oscars instead. We have gathered some links on the bottom of each page for further info.

Our 700 litre (180 gallon) tank

We have a 700 litre (180 gallon) aquarium placed on a stand made of Leca bricks. The tank was built in 1995 by Turun Akvaariopiste in Finland according to the given dimensions. A 2000 litres per hour Sacem pump takes care of the filtering along with the philodendron, which is our biological filter. The tank works very well and the water is crystal clear. We change about 1/3 of the water every 2-3 weeks.

There's a single fluorescent strip light and one spot light aimed towards the philodendron. The spot light is lit a couple hours before the actual aquarium light. This effect makes the oscars wake up as if it is a moonlight. They actually like this illumination and adult oscars begin their spawning rituals very often when the spot light is solely turned on.

Overview of the aquarium

Currently there are five baby oscars and one leopard pleco living in the tank. The fishes come along pretty well - the catfish doesn't even register the oscars and the oscars propably think that the catfish laying on the bottom is a piece of log or something.
